We held our first event in August 2018, a joint 5-day hands-on workshop called “Digitally Mapping Eastern Europe.”  During this intensive event, the Herder Institute staff organized workshops on mapping – both digital and analog – that centered on the archival materials at the Herder Institute, including their enormous collections of historical and contemporary maps, photographs, postcards, and newspaper clippings. Workshops members had a chance to present their projects, and Katharina Lorenz from Giessen University delivered a keynote. Photos from this event are on our website, and write-ups from participants on our blog page.

The overall aim of the Princeton-Herder collaboration is to further the contact and exchange between universities in the US, Europe, and beyond. As part of the Leibnitz consortium in Germany, the Herder Institute constitutes an ideal site for Princeton to grow our connections in the field of digital humanities, especially in the area of Eastern European Studies.

Support for the 2018 summer workshop came from the International Fund, the Program in Russian East European and Eurasian Studies, the European Program, the Center for Digital Humanities, and the Slavic Department.
